2003 MiniGame Compo

 And the winner is...

Minima Reloaded

by Robin Harbron. Congratulations, Robin! The silver joystick goes to Amusement Park 4000 in second place, and the bronze joystick goes to Bellringer in third. Whack, in fourth place, takes the top spot for a 1k program. Congratulations all!

The results page contains scores and voter comments for individual games. The results by category page contains the separated 4k and 1k results. The overall contest comments are below.

For the morbidly curious/terminally nerdy there are some voting statistics. There's also an html version that is much better-looking but larger (provided by MV).

If you missed it, you can still download the votepack containing all the games and docs (on single disk/tape images when possible) and emulator instructions.

The previous page is here. The page containing all the games is here.

And finally, the Minigame BBS is ready and waiting for your comments.

Thanks to all who submitted games, and thanks to all who voted! And a special thanks to the thoroughly ruling minigame team!

See you all next year!

 Contest Comments

"I think we should have only the 1K series in the next Minigame compo. 1K is a real challenge - you really need to optimize the code size and organize the memory to have enough space for graphics. " -- aeeben.

"A wonderful idea, I really enjoyed looking at and testing many of the games. Apologies to those whose games I did not have time to try before voting ended!" -- Lothers.

"Well, a lot of games were very good, and I even stayed playing some of them for more than 20 minutes straight. Very nice :) " -- Dbug.

"Wow, great turnout this year. If my life had not been so CRAZY lately I probably would have had an entry. Next year I will have at least one entry.. I can't keep missing out like this! Great work everyone! " -- bhz.

"Thanks to Steve and the others for organizing this!" -- Robin_Harbron.

"I spent the better part of a day donwloading, playing, and testing all these games. All I have to say is in the end it was worth it! Hope to see the compo again next year. Thanks to all for the hardwork maintaining the contest and those who submitted!" -- J_Robertson.

"Some authors get it and some authors don't: Part of making a tiny game immersive is backstory! Think back to the crazy scenarios outlined in 2600, C64, etc. games. As a group, the Spectrum authors seemed to do very well with this concept. " -- jcompton.

"What can I say? Great compo. I am already waiting for next year compo..." -- pieffe.

"I wasn't all that impressed with this year's minigame entries. I thought that these could have been done better. " -- tnd64.

"4K size is a very interesting for coders. Vote system is good, but it should be better that during voting period, it will be put something like this on the homepage:Number of vote being edited: xx Number of vote already submitted: yy. I was not able to test all the games: in some cases source of emulators didn't compile in Linux, in other cases, I can't test dut to emulator limitation." -- ice00.

"I am sorry that I only voted for Commodore submissions. I only have VICE, and just do not have enough time at present to download other emulators and play the other games before the voting deadline. I had no idea there were sites like this until a little while ago. I want to submit a game next year badly! Thanks for this site and the compo! " -- ottawavic.

"How about an "uneven" size limit next year (e.g. 1.5K or 3.5K)" -- gest.

"Looking forward to next year!" -- loopy.

"Very cool contest :)" -- joesmooth.

"Great contest !! I've heard that many of us will carry on to actually making full versions of our games and publishing them under the Cronosoft label !!! " -- GOC.

"The compo was quite smoothly run, the sponsoring idea seems to have worked out pretty well. And I liked the 4k category, I hope it'll be back next year. :-)" -- rus.

"Wonderful competition. It introduced me to several architectures I'd never seen before, and directed me to other programming communities as well. Bravo!" -- mcmartin.

"I wish I could have checked more games. ;-( Keep it up - those little, cute games always give lots of fun!" -- Magnate.

"I *love* the contest and the categories are IMO well chosen. I am quite surprised by the IMO very huge quality differences. While some submission are really made professional, others are looking like the work of maybe a rainy afternoon. I hope my votes and comments aren't too "cruel" ;-) " -- tjentzsch.
